Why Microsoft windows is called Windows?

Why Microsoft windows is called Windows

In the beginning, Microsoft windows were called by a more weird name than Bill Gates gave it. If Bill Gates had got what he wanted Microsoft windows would be known as “Interface Manager”. Bill Gates planned to release it alongside the same name and he did so.

However, later on, “Interface manager” was changed to “Microsoft windows”(commonly known as windows or win) since windows best define the box-type structure that was primary to the recently developed operating system.

History of Microsoft Windows

History of Microsoft Windows;

Windows had three major problems. First, it didn’t work right out of the box; it took hours of troubleshooting before users could get their programs running. Second, it couldn’t load graphics files and third, it wasn’t compatible with existing software. However, it developed and improved gradually.

In 1987, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSRC) to help solve these problems. MSRC’s first product was called “Microsoft Window’s Operating Environment”. It included several improvements over DOS including windowing, icons, mouse-driven menus, and integrated networking. However, it still didn’t run many applications. In 1992, they released the 2.03 version of windows. Version 2.03 added color underlines to menu items.

In 1993, MSRC developed the graphical user interface, commonly known as “GUI”. The GUI allowed programmers to design software much faster than using command line prompts. Windows 95 and 98 were released in 1995. These versions included features such as the Start button, taskbar, desktop, and Control Panel.

However, none of these changes solved the problem of incompatible software. To resolve this issue, Microsoft created a program called “Interim Updates Service” (IUS). IUS checked each version of Windows to determine if its code was compatible with previous versions. If not, it would automatically download updates and install them. In addition, it would prevent incompatible software from being installed.

Thus began the concept of “Service Packs”. A service pack is a collection of bug fixes, features, and compatibility updates that improve performance and enhance the functionality of Windows. There have been 15 service packs since Windows 95.

Windows 2000, the first fully 32-bit operating system, was released in October 2001. It introduced a number of enhancements including Active Desktop, Internet Explorer 5, Direct X 8, DirectX Shader Model 4, and Internet Information Services (IIS). Windows XP was released in October 2002 and includes enhancements such as Internet Explorer 6, DirectX 9, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Media Player 10, and IIS 5.5. Windows Vista, released in January 2007, introduces enhancements such as Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Dynamic Graphics Exchange Format (DGIF), and Wireless Fidelity (WIFI).

Today, Windows runs almost all PCs worldwide. Currently, it is estimated that about 80% of computing devices use it.
